The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set a global agenda to address some of the most pressing issues facing humanity. Among these goals, eradicating poverty occupies a significant position, and the College of Law at Al-Nahrain University has made effective efforts to align with this goal. The college has worked diligently to alleviate poverty among its students, staff, and society as a whole. The following are the most prominent activities and initiatives that reflect the college’s commitment to promoting a more equitable and sustainable future in the fight against poverty:

First: Supporting Vulnerable Groups

To ensure that financial constraints do not hinder students’ access to quality education, the college works to provide scholarships and financial assistance to students from vulnerable groups, enabling them to complete their studies and achieve their academic dreams. The college also strives to allocate support programs specifically to assist students facing financial difficulties, contributing to their academic success. In addition, 20 students out of a total of 59 received tuition reductions during the 2023-2024 academic year, In addition, a committee was formed to assist foreign students and those in need, and financial support was provided to foreign students.

Second: Volunteer Work and Community Initiatives

The College of Law seeks to foster a culture of volunteer work among its students by organizing initiatives and events aimed at encouraging students to engage in projects that support vulnerable groups, such as food distribution or providing free educational services to orphans and the poor.

Third: Employment and Career Services

The college provides comprehensive employment and career development services for students. These services include resume building, interview preparation, and communication with employers. This ensures graduates’ smooth transition into the job market, ultimately contributing to reducing the risks of unemployment and poverty.

Fourth: Partnerships and Collaboration with Non-Governmental Organizations

The college seeks to build partnerships with non-governmental organizations that focus on issues of poverty and sustainable development. These partnerships can contribute to raising awareness of poverty-related issues and providing opportunities for students to participate in field projects aimed at improving the living conditions of marginalized groups.

Fifth: Education as a Means of Development

The college believes that education is the key to eradicating poverty. This is achieved by identifying the percentage of students who receive financial aid to enroll in the college due to poverty, and by offering them specialized academic programs. Furthermore, admission to the college is free and open to all, with no financial costs. Student housing is provided for a small fee, followed by ongoing facilities and subsidies.

Sixth: Promoting Research on Poverty Issues

The college actively encourages research that addresses poverty issues, its causes, and ways to address and reduce it. Some students and faculty members conduct studies on poverty in the local community, which helps understand the challenges facing them and offers innovative solutions to combat it.
